Is Early Retirement at 30 with $5M More Appealing Than Waiting to 40 with $10M?
I’ve reached $5 million in net worth—primarily through saving a large portion of my W2 income and a handful of lucky gains in tech stocks. My current compensation is about $200k, and I’m working roughly 60 hours a week. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I hate my job and feel burnt out by long hours and office politics. I don’t feel any strong identity ties to my role or industry.
Despite this, I’ve achieved a level of financial independence that many only dream of, largely through living well below my means. The decision I’m weighing now is whether to retire at 30 with $5M today or to postpone retirement until 40, by which time I’d have $10M.
Key context about my situation:
– I am single, male, 30, based in the United States.
– If I retire now, I plan to split time between the U.S. (about six months) and slow-travel in affordable countries for the other six months. Places like Bangkok, Taipei, Mexico City, Ho Chi Minh City, and Lima are appealing for both cost of living and the experience of living abroad, especially for food.
– Current annual spending has averaged around $30k, limited mainly to rent, utilities, and groceries. I own a 2009 Toyota and would likely increase annual spending to about $60k if I retire now.
– I’ve considered that, even without additional income, $5M could grow to roughly $10M over the next decade at a ~7% CAGR, effectively funding a $60k/year lifestyle through age 40.
– Health concerns have prompted me to question whether work truly matters to me or will matter as I approach the end of life.
Decision framework I’m considering:
– Retire now at 30 with $5M and live frugally while enjoying travel, relationships, health, and personal fulfillment.
– Continue working with the aim of reaching $10M by age 40, thereby increasing financial cushion and potential flexibility, but delaying the personal opportunity to focus on life outside of work.
What I’m asking for:
– Your perspectives on retirement timing given a $5M vs. $10M scenario.
– Any considerations I might be overlooking (lifestyle trade-offs, health versus happiness, risk factors, investment assumptions, or potential changes to costs in early retirement).
– Suggestions for how to structure a decision-making process or a plan if I choose to retire now vs. later.
If you have insights, experiences, or questions that could help me solidify my choice, I’d really value them. Thank you for taking the time to weigh in.
